Sleeping with knee pain.
« : March 15, 2017, 02:27:52 PM »
I'm Back!

ACL, LCL reconstruction several years on.

Tennis, Volleyball - I had the op so I could continue playing and that is what I have done for the last seven years but now the osteoarthritis is causing me pain on the inside of my left knee (knee op knee) and I have patella tendinitis in my left knee. Whilst i can still play and get around without pain (apart from the tendinitis in the left knee which I were a patella band for whilst playing) I'm finding sleeping a real pain (excuse the pun). When I turn over in the night with the covers over my legs the op knee gives a stab of pain which wake me up and also my partner as I often cry out. The tendinitis in the other knee will sometimes become very painful coming on in the same way cramp does and building up and up until I'm almost in tear and then it will subside again.

What can I do?

I spoke to the G.P and he just shrugged and said take some pain relief.

I'm thinking if I could support the knee with a braced strap or something then it would not cause stress on the join when I turn over in the night but there are so many braces out there I don't know what to choose. Maybe there is something else that could be don which I'm not aware of.

Any thoughts?

On another note I found a surgeon doing stem cell cartilage re growth for knee injuries as pioneered in Bologna and use for football knee injuries but after going for a couple of MRI scans he said my issues were not suitable for the procedure. Anyone heard anything new about this area of regrowing cartilage in the knee?

Assuming you are in the UK... Can you go see a private physio and get advice on 'appliances' as they really are the expert (or there are companies that specialise in bracing etc, my physio recommended a place in SW London for example, called Ability Matters).  My physio rates Ossur, but Donjoy are highly rated too.

A physio may also be able to help with a strategy for the tendinitis (rest is always recommended though)

Are you also seeing a knee specialist and discussing treatment options, they'll be able to tell you what's new and where and how much it'll cost...(or if there are any suitable trials)?  There's lots of stuff going on in Eastern Europe, stem cell wise for example...but nothing yet has been consistently proven to  ultimately repair advanced OA (hyaluronic acid can help for example).
Partial replacements are improving, there are some surgeons doing patching of worn areas (e.g. Gourav Datta in Southampton IIRC), osteotomy can offload a damaged compartment etc...

How did you get on with your recovery ReturnOfSSB? Did you manage to seek out a decent new treatment? If you are still looking for Stemcell, might be worth looking at MACI or ACI. Bit of googling will bring up a lot of consultants that are now using these techniques with varying levels of success. I am hoping to have a 2nd ACI if viable (albeit now with a decent head for recovery)

@Vickster - your not the vickster from the fiat coupe forum are you??
